From single core processors to the six core beasts of today. So, before we decide on what is going in our computer, we first need to decide on a budget.

However, there are processors and equipment for all kinds of price ranges. Those are just fancy terms for having more than one graphics card rendering at a time.
Now that that's out of the way, let's pick a processor. The more cores the merrier. But more cores will typically cost more money. Another thing to look at is the processing power, expressed in GHz. And a high bit cashe, typically 64-bit, will greatly improve performance. And don't forget to check if your motherboard is compatible with your chosen processor. A lot of good a thousand dollar processor will do with a motherboard that won't run it.
Another thing to consider will be RAM. RAM could be considered how fast your computer will run multiple things. A high amount of RAM is a requirement. A few two gig RAM sticks would do nicely, but for the best gaming computer, why don't we scale it up to four 8 gig sticks? With that much RAM, your computer will be able to execute things rapidly and in unison. It will also be able to run multiple programs at once. Or, a few programs extremely fast.
And while we're talking about RAM, let's talk about graphics cards. RAM and a nice graphics card go hand and hand like a motherboard and processor. A lot of RAM will not perform well with a weak graphics card. And an excellent graphics card can't perform to it's full potential without a sufficient amount of RAM to back it up. As mentioned above, our computer will be used first for games and then for work. And the only way to go is to run multiple GPUs. GPU is short for Graphics Processing Unit, which is what graphics cards are. Some motherboards come pre-loaded with everything you need to run two GPUs at once. While more expensive ones can run three and even four at a time. The more a computer has to utilize, the better it will perform. For most modern games, one excellent or even two very good GPUs are acceptable. But to "futureproof" your gaming computer and ensure it can play games released two, three and even five years from now, having two or more extremely powerful GPUs will be beneficial.
